MATT HURRAY released his second solo project of instrumental surf tunes entitled “Unnecessary Commentary” on June 29th, 2016. All eighteen songs were written, performed, and recorded between the winter of 2013 and the spring of 2016.
Hurray is featured as the composer / lead guitarist and is accompanied by Jim Rice (Additional Guitars), Peter Freiberger (Bass Guitar), Gary Ferguson (Drums), Danny Timms (Keyboards) and Gary Brandin (Steel Guitar). Additional guest musicians are Chris Cruttenden (Ukulele on June Solstice) and Ron Finn (Additional Guitar on Corduroy).
“Unnecessary Commentary” is an exciting collection of original instrumental tunes crafted by Hurray that includes upbeat classics, medium paced gems, and a few mellow relaxers that keep the audience involved in the fun from start to finish. MATT HURRAY, founding member and bassist for the ever popular super group JUST PLAIN BIG has released his first ever solo project of instrumental surf tunes. After years of on again / off again ventures with Just Plain Big, which included two national tours, three full length albums, music videos and numerous shows with bands such as THE HOODOO GURUS, THE ENGLISH BEAT and THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS to name a few, the group slowed to a stand still and the members moved on in various musical directions.
This new album "Egyptian Surfer" was written, performed, and recorded over the spring and summer of 2011 by Matt Hurray who plays Guitar, Bass, various percussion instruments and Vocals. Southern California music legends Jim Rice (Additional Guitars, Bass, and Harmonies), Gary Ferguson (Drums), Danny Timms and Eric Vinje (Keyboards) also perform on the album. "Egyptian Surfer" takes the listener on a musical adventure with upbeat grinding surf guitar tunes as well as a few mellow acoustic and electric numbers to create a body of work that is a joy to listen to over and over again.

Influenced by the long admired and never forgotten sounds of surf rock legends (The Ventures, The Challengers, The Surfaris…) Matt Hurray’s frenetic, frenzied and feverish original songs are exciting, entertaining and impressively sharp.
Hurray has been writing and performing original music for over 30 years. A founding member of the ever rocking, underrated, self-destructive, extremely popular Orange County California super group Just Plain Big, he started his solo career in 2012 with the full length surf instrumental CD release entitled ‘Egyptian Surfer’ to exceptional reviews across the country. In 2016 Hurray released the eighteen song surf epic CD ‘Unnecessary Commentary’ which received extraordinary reviews, radio airplay throughout the world, and soundtrack credits for both radio and television advertisements. Hurray has performed with The Hoodoo Gurus, The English Beat, The Blaster’s, They Might Be Giants, Sublime, and Dick Dale to name just a few.
"Bitchin" is a strong release that includes nine surf covers (some standards and some obscure gems) and a re-recorded / remix of Hurray's own song 'El Rollo'. "Bitchin" will be followed up by another collection of ten songs at the end of July or early August.
